Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024

The 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, held from 11 to 14 July at the historic Goodwood Estate in West Sussex, England, once again delivered an exhilarating mix of motorsport history, high-performance engineering, and cutting-edge innovation. This year’s theme, "Horseless to Hybrid," paid tribute to the evolution of automotive technology, showcasing everything from the earliest motor vehicles to the latest advancements in electric and hybrid performance.
One of the standout highlights was the 100th-anniversary celebration of MG, a brand that has long been at the heart of British motoring. The Central Feature, designed by Gerry Judah, was a breathtaking sculpture that captured MG’s incredible journey—from its 1920s roadsters to its modern-day focus on electric vehicles. The display reflected both heritage and innovation, a recurring theme throughout the festival.
Another major milestone celebrated at Goodwood this year was Mercedes-Benz’s 130 years of motorsport excellence. The German manufacturer showcased an extraordinary parade of iconic race cars, including the legendary “Blue Wonder”—a 1955 racing transporter carrying the Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Formula 1 car. This Silver Arrow, famously driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, secured back-to-back F1 World Championships in 1954 and 1955, symbolising Mercedes-Benz’s long-standing dominance in the sport.
Record-Breaking Hillclimb & Hypercar Unveilings
A major attraction at the festival was the Hillclimb Shootout, where drivers pushed their machines to the absolute limit on Goodwood’s famous 1.16-mile course. This year, Romain Dumas, driving the Ford SuperVan 4.2 Electric, set a blistering time of 43.98 seconds, proving that electric vehicles are rapidly redefining performance standards.
Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing stunned the crowd with the world premiere of the RB17 hypercar, a track-only machine designed by Adrian Newey. With a naturally aspirated V10 engine producing 1,000 horsepower, supported by a 200hp electric motor, the RB17 is expected to outperform even modern Formula 1 cars on certain circuits. Weighing under 900kg, the hypercar’s extreme aerodynamics and downforce make it one of the most advanced racing machines ever built.
Future Technology, Supercars, & Motorsport Tributes
Beyond the on-track action, the Future Lab, presented by Randox, offered an exciting glimpse into the future of motoring and technology. From autonomous vehicles and AI-driven transport solutions to sustainable mobility innovations, the exhibition highlighted Goodwood’s commitment to leading the conversation on automotive progress.
Meanwhile, the Supercar Paddock displayed some of the world’s most impressive high-performance vehicles, while the First Glance Paddock introduced attendees to the latest automotive debuts. Among the showstoppers were the Tesla Cybertruck, the MG Cyberster Coupé, and the Aprilia RSV4 superbike, each demonstrating new technological and design advancements.
The festival also paid tribute to motorsport legends, with Juan Pablo Montoya reuniting with his Williams FW26-06 and Yuki Tsunoda taking the wheel of Honda’s first Grand Prix-winning RA272 from 1965. A special Red Bull Racing showcase featured every Red Bull F1 car from the RB1 to the 2022 RB18, with Max Verstappen making his Goodwood debut in his 2021 championship-winning RB16B.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024 perfectly captured the essence of motorsport—a dynamic fusion of history, engineering excellence, and future innovation. From record-breaking hillclimb runs to unveiling next-generation hypercars, this year’s event reaffirmed Goodwood’s status as the ultimate celebration of speed, performance, and automotive passion.
